Small can be mighty!

Bantam Beans — Not any old bean cuts it these days as today’s coffee consumers are increasingly picky about the authenticity and provenance of the beans in their brew. So, it was exciting to be asked to create a new challenger brand for the premium coffee sector based on ethically sourced, micro batch bean production by small community cooperatives from around the world.

The Foster + Baylis team created a brand name that encapsulated the essence of the brand’s small scale, community focussed production – Bantam, meaning “small in size but spirited in nature”. Being mindful of the communities’ costs, we created a generic kraft paper bag with bold Bantam branding. This was paired with a label with a colourful nod to the geographic provenance of the beans and wine-like language to describe their origin and taste attributes, right down to telling the stories of the local communities that picked and packed them.

Disciplines: Naming. Brand strategy. Brand identity. Packaging design. Design implementation. Art direction. Creative retouching. Guidelines.

A success story for small cooperatives, their communities and coffee connoisseurs alike as the brand continues to make great strides and reach a wider audience.
